Maybe they were a little concerned because orange isn't Thor's color. It happens often enough. I bet they were just a little concerned that you chose an unflattering color for his particular physique.
The other lady was probably a random crazy. We have those in TN too. My advice is to experiment with a few colors.... maybe Thor is a winter
