I have never had a problem with them splintering. I am not sure but I think the old bones would splinter. Mine are replaced every month or so. If you go to the grocery store ask the meat department for some soup bones. I usually pick out the packages with alot of maro and go by the size of the bone. I have 4 dogs (1 large, 1 med and 2 small) so I get all sizes. I usually spend a couple of dollars on 1 package.
I put a sleeping bag down for them to eat them on until the maro is out, then they are pretty clean toys. I dont find that they smell at all. I hope this helps you.
