For the most part the purpose is to line the pockets of the makers.
I'm not saying they're never useful but a dog on a kibble approved by AAFCO shouldn't need them and that's what most dogs eat.
There are things like vitamin e that are given for specific purposes and those do have certain benefits in certain cases.
