It is the right thing to do.
Left untreated it can weaken the heart, liver, kidneys and lungs.
All of the loose teeth should be pulled and xrays should probably be done to check for bone loss.
Antibiotics and pain meds should be given.
Your vet can apply OraVet to form a barrier against tartar.
You would have to apply it weekly at home after the cleaning though.
Is the vet doing preop blood work?
The same thing happened to Ellie at age 5 and she had to have oral surgery also. It was done under gas anesthesia with an injectable before. Isoflurane and Sevoflurane are the safest for maintenance.
