The licking his paws until they are soaking wet would concern me. If he only did this once, there could be some sticker or irritation, but if this is a daily thing I would look at a food allergy. A common allergen is corn, and I've read several people say that after switching to a food with no corn for several weeks the paw licking stopped. The only other connection, I've read about was a dog that used a stainless steel water bowl, and apparently the nickel in the stainless leached out and caused an allergic reaction.

By the way, I thought they were born with their balls, I didn't realize thy just appear, so maybe you want to listen to someone who's a little more knowledgeable.
