when Lacy had her sides, abdomen and chest shaved I just left the top of her back and everything else stay long. I figured the bottom part would eventually grow out...she does look pretty funny naked right now though. So I always have her in clothes so you can't see her crazy hair cut too much. I don't think the dogs worry about their hair as much as we do..I think as long as we still make them feel beautiful/handsome they are fine. So if you think it's easier to shave and let it all grow out, go for it. I'd just keep some shirts and sweaters on hand in case he gets cold
