you are SHAVING him right?? I'd just worry about him being too cold- especially since he will be just LAYING for quite a while- but i guess he can have a sweater on or a blanket. I think it makes the most sense- especially since if you left it long that hair is gonna smell like hospital and you dont' want to have to brush him out and stuff- i think it is the best idea to do what you are doing- get a nice short cut! can we see pictures when he comes back
