Vinegar works and it's cheap. I always soak my throw rugs in the washing machine in vinegar then I put them through a wash cycle. Fill the washer with water then add a cup or more of vinegar and let them soak for a bit. Run it through a cycle and then I wash them again with my soap. It seems to work for me. You can even try equal parts of vinegar and powdered cascade to hot water in the machine and let it soak. That removed nasty stains and smells from my sons football equipment. I think it's like a cup of vinegar and 1 cup of cascade (just make sure it's powder). Good luck
