How is Beans (love the name!) doing today?

Doesn't it just tear your heart to shreds thinking of what these little ones must have gone through. Annie B was a rescued breeder from a puppy mill and I was in tears more then once from her reactions to 'normal' things when I first got her. But time does heal a lot of hurts and after about a year she started truly enjoying life.

Give him some time, a lot of love and treats, he'll figure it out and come around. Do your best to act 'normal' when you do things with him. Perhaps try to spread out the 'bad' things so that he's not so completely overwhelmed right at first.
