Poor baby, what a blessing you are to him! Have you tried the pedipaws on him? I use one on my furkids and it works lots better than nail clippers. I've been a profession groomer for 30 or so years and when I got my first dremmel I wasn't too impressed with them, but the pedipaws is so much easier for the home groomer. It may be less traumatic for him and you can get them for less than 20 dollars now. You can start out slow, one nail at a time and work your way to a foot at a time.
Bless your heart for adopting him, it takes time but he will come around.
