Well, I would say that it depends on the area you wish him to be in. If your kitchen is puppy proof and there is nothing for him to get hurt with then you can leave him there with a gate. If your kitchen is large, then you might want to use a pen to restrict his movements (for potty training). I use a pen. They go in there at night to sleep but it is open during the daytime.
