If my vet was willing to hold off on a rabies shot, there is no way I'd do it...
Your pup will likely be fine because a lot of small pups get them but the shot is very potent and it isn't extremely safe. I say go with the original vets advice. If you are in a state where medical waivers are an acceptable replacement for rabies shots, then maybe your vet can write you one to take to the groomer.
A lot of states require it at 4 months but some vets will let you wait. I would personally avoid vaccinating this early if at all possible. The rabies shot should never be given on the same day as any other shot.
