Sad ID Theft - what happened to a personal friend of mine

This is SO SCARY - just received this from a personal friend, this morning:

Team and friends, please read this carefully. If this can happen to me, it can happen to you. Follow the timeline - this is a nightmare!

Last Thursday March 26th, my husband and I received multiple phone calls from our credit card companies that "suspected frauduent activity" had occurred on our credit cards. It was significant enough for us to take note and make the move to join LifeLock. We opened the LifeLock account on Friday March 27th.

On Sunday March 29th at ~5pm, I attempted to log on to LifeLock and was denied access with a security warning that my phone number and password had been changed. I did not change this and had not even logged onto LifeLock yet! My husband and I spent almost 3 hours on the phone with LifeLock making our account bulletproof.

Sunday 8:15pm - my husband recieves an email in his aol account that our "identities have been taken" and it stated the terms and conditions in which we would have control over our lives again. One of these conditions was to "allow this person access for the next 10 days" in which at the end of the 10 days it would be turned back over to us and at that time we would be able to deal with "customer care representitives" from credit card companies, we would not be held responsible because banks are prepared for these kinds of things. We were warned not to interfere or call the police.

Sunday 8:30 we began to close all of our accounts, credit cards, checking, savings, etc…with the intent of reopening the following work day and calling the police.

Midnight - we received a phone call at home in a computer-disguised voice threatening us that we were warned to not interfere for 10 days, some vulgarities and more threats that "now you will really pay"…. This call came to our home phone from my husbands cell phone.

Monday 12:20 am - my husband logged onto his aol account, all 811 e-mails had been deleted - except for the identity ransom note. This person has remote access to my husbands account and was also able to see all of our activity on line.

Monday 1:15 am Sherriff called and police report taken

Monday 8:00 am - FBI shows up at our front door.

Fortunately, we have only lost a very small amount of money - as a small household account was actually breached - however, we continue to deal with the phone calls from companies verifying applications from Paypal to Home equity lines.

Please protect yourselves. Information that you thought was safe is not. For example, your mother's maiden name - change these to something bizaar such as 2stopsign77.

We thought we were being careful. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone.

OMG, this scares the crap out of me. I think hubby and me are safe, but gosh, you just never know!!!
