Cause is known to be genetic and therefor the OFA and YTCA recommend not breeding affected dogs or those known to produce Pups with the disease. Treatment is usually surgery. They remove the part of the femoral head that has died from what I've read. I'm sure your vet can give you more details. I'm sorry about your dog
