You just have to compare it to something so they get it. For instance, for one school year, I pay well over $1,000 for books that I rarely look at and will never use again, so spending that much for a dog that you love and will have for several years is well worth it, IMO. I would probably be tempted to say something b*tchy, but I'm gonna have to work on keeping those thoughts inside my head, lol.
