I sold a puppy once that got killed jumping off the back of a couch. The little girl was around 5 or 6 months old and weighed around 3 1/2 lbs. Her owners did not have carpet on their floor. The puppy took a flying leap off the top of the couch and landed wrong and broke her neck. So sad. There are definitely risks in letting them do it. Some of mine jump on the back of our couch to look out the window and have fallen off but they land on the windowsill and luckily don't get hurt. The little girl that was killed was petite with small bone structure and those are the ones that are really at risk of getting hurt when jumping.
