You should always make a topknot first with bands anyway, then pop the bow on top. You shouldn't use the bow to make the topknot.
Just make sure the topknot isn't too tight and use high quality grooming bands. The end of a rat tail comb works well to loosen the topknot. Barrettes can actually break the hair, too.
My bow customers are pretty much split 50/50 as far as bands or barrettes go.
