Judy gave you some great info here.
If you suspect this could be staph, at all, please get to the vet asap. All of us have staph on us, but when the skin is broken and/or when staph multiplies inappropriately - it can be extremely deadly if a staph infection occurs. Really, even sepsis can happen. Keep us posted!
