Since the boys are getting older now (oldest will be 13...youngest will be 9 next weekend), we usually do a dinner for them on their actual b'day...just family usually...then the weekend of or after, we let them pick a place they want to go and they invite 1-2 friends. We started this last year and it has been great...I don't have to stress out with the planning and making sure everything is just right ( a bit OCD, I think) and the boys seem to enjoy it more. Not to mention the money we save...parties are EXPENSIVE.
We did almost excatly like you. I use to go ALL out when they were younger.....one party we combined comined threee b'days a cousin in Nov. one of my son's was in Dec. and my other son was in Feb. Well, we picked a " middle " date for all of them and did one big party. My husband is an electrician so I had him add receptacls EVERYWHERE in the convereterd carport/room and put out evrery gaming machine that was out....I think we had 5 different systems and called the party Game Wars.....the winner of each machine won a block buster card so they could rent a game/movie for their house. It was crazy fun....lots of kids!

As the boys got older we did a cake on their b'day no matter what and let them pick a few friends to go somewhere....they liked the idea better. I had plenty of bowling, ice skating, etc...parties. before that felt they were too old for a party.

I am trying to put together a HUGE bash for my daughter's 1st b'day in August. I know its just for pictures for them later, but she didn't have a shower as I only knew I was preg 4 weeks before I had her so I still have family that have not met her. I am thinking of renting a room at a very nice hotel where we did my Mom's b'day

They have a heated pool, beautiful court yard both indoors for family and frinds to visit.I have mats for the floor to put in the room and throw toys for the few kids that will be there, but plan to have most people just met us at the Zoo and only certain people come back to the room. My bestfriends from out of town and their girls can stay w/me and Sydney at the room and then we can shop or whatever the next day. Anyway, this is all just an idea right now.
