We did that in 4th Grade as a science project (a long time ago). My teacher at the time had connections with our local college - Michigan State University and arrange to borrow all the equipment.
I can remember how exciting it was for our class to watch process. We had someone from the college come in one day and they used a light bulb to show us the progress of our eggs/Chickens.
Now the downside was as someone mentioned, cute little chicks soon grow into big old, sometimes mean Hens and Roosters. Our parents had to sign off on either 1, letting us bring the complete project home or 2, donating them to the Small Animal Farm at Michigan State. My parent opted for the second choice...I was heartbroken and had ambitions of being a Chicken Farmer for about 3 months.
I do remembe it was fun and as a child I was fascinated with whole process. That may contribute to me such an animal lover.
