How old is he? We took Eddie on a 7-hour trip when he was just months old, and we were basket cases on the first leg. My wife wanted to pull over every 25 miles because he was fussy. But he never had to pee when we pulled over. By the return trip, he was a pro.
The younger Bentley is, the more I'd tend to stop, but I would think one stop on a 4-hour trip would be plenty even for a pup. Give him a chance to pee and let him stretch his legs.
We keep a doggy water bottle and food handy so stops are efficient and quick.
Is the carrier you're talking about a car seat? He may take a while to adjust to that, but practice drives around town like you said
Good luck.
