The solid waste I pick up as soon as I see it and flush it. My dogs go outside and on the pads, so one pad will usually last a day or two unless teh weather is bad. When they are using the pads only I would probably change at least every day or two.
How many you get depends on how often you want to wash. About four is a good sized load depending on the size of the washer. So a beginning set of 5 is nice because you can do four together in a load to save on washing costs and you still have one down while they are washing. But some people start with two and wash each one on alternate days. It is personal preference, I guess.
