I lived in Gastonia for about a year a while back. I really loved it. It's right outside of Charlotte. It's a growing town, so a lot of newer homes. They have a huge park (wooden castle with a sandbox moat), lots of outdoor family activities. I also loved the grocery store Harris Teeter there. It has a small daycare in it so you can have your kids play while you shop.
