I personally would not use the sedatives. Ruby got spayed a few weeks ago and she was pretty much back to herself by day 4. I took Ruby outside on a leash for bathroom breaks and took her right inside after. I didn't let her have free time outside at all until about a 1 1/2 weeks after her sergury. Inside i let her play only in my bedroom for 1 1/2 weeks so she couldn't run around very much. That seemed to work for her and me.
