From the time lacy was a young puppy she could climb out of xpens and scale baby gates too. The only thing that would keep her contained was a wire crate since it was fully enclosed. They do make xpen covers too so maybe you can get one of those. The only other suggestion is an encousure or gate that only has vertical bars so they can't climb out
