A babygate is definitely a good idea. I have 2 babies at home, my 7 months old Yorkie and my almost 3 months old Maltese. We keep both of them in our kitchen and hallway area blocked off by a babygate. We put 2 pee pads down on opposite sides of the area, food, water, toys, and their beds are in there with them. My fiance' is usually home within 6-8 hours after I have left to go to work. Even though they have each other, they still cry and whine for a little while as I leave(fiance' leaves for work before me). By the time he gets home, they are usually playing or cuddled up together. We only have to do this 4 days out of the week. I would defintely get a babygate, and you can also just leave the crate in the room with the door open so he has that option of going in there to rest if he wants.
