Not all dogs are stolen; it's just a safety precaution. If you read the threads around here, there are plenty of lost dogs. With a stolen dog, there is some protection on proving that the dog is really yours. I registered Joey's microchip number with the AKC and they have a 24-hour service that informs all local animal agencies of the problem, they also contact all vets in the area. This could be especially useful if you are traveling. I'm not sure what the specific microchip company (Home Again) offers for help, but I would call them too, if Joey were lost. I recently read a thread of someone finding a Yorkie at their door and trying everything to find the owner, but the dog had no chip. It's more like you are buying reassurance than anything, but for 20-30 dollars, and lifetime protection, that a lot of reassurance for the money. If I had an unneutered dog, there is no doubt I would get this.
