Default Going to Work: What to do with Yorkie?

I've been a stay-at-home mom for 22 years and recently got a job that will start in June. Our Yorkie is a year and 8 months old. When I have to leave the house, he goes into his crate (he loves it). But if I'm going to be gone all day, I don't want to crate him that long. He is housetrained to potty outside -- no pee pads. Should I put him in a small room, like the laundry room, and gate the doorway, leaving a pee pad on the floor when I start work? I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to confuse him, but I also don't want to crate him for 8-9 hours at a time without access to food and water and a potty break.
