Tatum and Stormie (our Aust Shep) take Sentinel (oral med for heartworm and flea) and also take Comfortis (for fleas). Our flea problem is so outrageous in our area that this is what our vet recommended. They take one on the 1st of the month and the other on the 15th. Sometimes these pills don't actually give coverage for the full month so alternating them keeps them covered at all times.

As for the Comfortis, my two have been on it for quite a while.... maybe 9 months or so.... and have had no adverse reactions at all. Tatum is right at 6 lbs. so the vet didn't mention anything about weight issues. I think 5.4 lbs would be safe also but that's really a personal decision you need to make with your vet.
