Hey and welcome!
I think what you are doing by getting him to sleep and then putting him in his crate is great. I would also put it in my room so that he can see you, and most importantly, you can see him. These little guys are so small that anything can happen in the wink of an eye.
I always tell my friends to do the baby test.
Would you put your 13 week old baby in a crate downstairs, or in a room with the door closed by themselves? I assume we all know the answer is No.

I guess since the entrance of your house can have all the doors closed off, it might just make it into a big play room. Sounds fun for him. Especially since you sound like it is already baby-proofed.
Congrats on the new baby, and get us his name!!
