I think we all go to our vets hoping to be able to trust them. I certainly know that when I go, I don't want to second guess what they are telling me - what would be the purpose in going? If you have taken your precious baby to your vet, she is suffering greatly - which it sounds like Stormy was - and the vet suggests that "putting her to sleep" is the best and most humane thing to do, most people would follow their vet's advice. To suggest that this OP should have done otherwise is mean and cruel....
