I agree that it takes time. I had the same worry when we first brought Teddy home to our 7 year old Dachsie. It took almost a month, but they now play together quite often. They like to tease each other to start a game of chase. Paying at least as much attention to the older dog is very important so he does not feel second best. Teddy even taught the Dachsie how to play with toys again.
Everything will work out fine with time and patience.
