I have a baby gate at my kitchen door to keep the dogs from going in and out at will. It works well to keep Puddin' in and the other ones out. Fortunately I have a walled courtyard at the front of my house and the gates have "dog bars" (narrow spaces to keep the dogs from going through). My entire property has double doors or gates before reaching the outside so there is little chance someone will escape.
If I had your situation, though, I would put up a baby gate at the door and/or put a leash on the dog before opening the door. You could hang a leash on the doorknob to have it ready. Training, of course, is the ultimate answer, but until your baby is trained and trustworthy, I would do the gate and the leash. |
