Dry food in itself shouldn't cause that but maybe one of the ingredients doesn't agree with him. They also need to drink more when they are on dry and maybe he isn't dirnking enough.
If the canned pumpkin doesn't work, he should see the vet.
You might want to slowly transition to another food.
Canned food is fine if that's what you want to use.
Whatever you feed, his teeth need to be brushed.
