If I catch Puddin' "assuming the position" anyplace but her piddle pad, I say "NO!" very loudly and sharply (this gets her attention on me and away from peeing), then pick her up and take her to her pad where I tell her to "go potty." As soon as she does, I praise her effusively. If she doesn't go, I say nothing, just leave her in the room with her pad and shut the door. After a few minutes I let her out again.
They have very short attention spans. By the time your baby has peed in the house, gone outside, and come back in, she has no idea why you have put her in her cage. Punishment doesn't work (they will just find a place to hide and pee to avoid the punishment), but disrupting her concentration sharply and taking her immediately to her potty spot and giving the potty command, accompanied by praise for performance (and maybe even a treat) will go a lot further.
Puddin' is 12 weeks. When in her room, the only accidents we find are right around the pad (she seems to think that if her front paws are on the pad, the business end is on it too!). In the parts of the house where I am concerned about floors (and on the furniture), she wears a diaper which can be zipped off instantly if I catch her squatting, then she's off to the pad. It's working very well. |
