The best thing you can do to get rid of red eye is to move the flash up away from the lense. If moving the flash up from the lens is not possible (as is the case with most cameras) it is best to use an alternate external form of lighting such as a lamp as well as having plenty of light in the room so the pupils are smaller thus reducing the amount of possible red eye.
