Crate Training I have a few questions on what I should do with Chloe while we are at work. I just brought her home Friday. She is only seven weeks old so I can't expect too much from her as far as pottying yet. We introduced her to the crate with the door open. I took it with me from room to room. She has done well with going outside because I have been very consistent with her on taking her out. She is getting it VERY well. When I put her in the crate at night she does pretty well. The first time she cries I take her out to go potty. I expect she can't hold it because it has been around 3 hours. Then I put her back in. She cries, but we ignore it. I then get up around 5:30 to take her potty again and let her eat. She has not used the bathroom once in her crate.I stay up with her for a little while. I was planning on letting her play while I get ready, get some of that energy out, then put her back in around 7:15 because I have to be to work at 7:30. If I try to put her back in she cries and I think it is too much to ask of her to crate her all night, then turn around and stick her back in her crate. My husband comes home at 12 so he can let her out to use the restroom, but that is 4 and a half hours she would be there till he could be home to let her out, then she would have to be put right back in. That is WAY too many hours in the crate for her age. Also I am concerned with her getting enough to eat while we are gone
So I was thinking of getting her a playpen or xpen type thing and making a little area for her during the day . When she is ready to go potty at 5:30, she is full of energy. I was thinking about putting it in the kitchen where we keep her food, and then putting her crate in there with the door open so she could go in there if she wants. She has a little bed she has been napping on, so I would put that there as well. I would put a puppy pad down so she could use. However, do you think doing the crate at night and puppy pad during the day would throw her off. We have to start this tommorow and we have never practiced with the pads. So far, because it has been the weekend, we have been here with her. She is either by my side, in her crate if I am showering or can't watch her, or on her little doggie bed. I have heard it confuses them to use the pads and go outside, but at her age I can't expect her to be totally understanding what we are doing as far as pottying goes. What are your ideas on what I should do with her while we are gone? Please help =) |
