Both of my dogs know "pick you up" and they will turn around for me to pick them up. They will do this even if they are doing something else. They always turn around and are facing away from me when I do this. I have noticed that Cooper doesn't like to be picked up from the front angle. He will do that "shy away" thing if we try. I don't know why. You might try teaching them "pick you up" or whatever variation of words you want to use. We also say this EVERY time we pick them up, so they are always ready and are not surprised. They also know the word "stop" and we use this together with "pick you up" when we need them to come to us and be picked up.
