I wouldn't use any of the over the counter flea meds-- Hartz and etc. They can be very dangerous to smaller pets.

The brands available through vets are generally safer (Frontline, Revolution)...

It's also worth noting that if you have a cat in the house as well as your dog, you need to be doubly careful with what brand you choose. Several of the canine flea control products on the market-- the ones that contain permethrin-- can be deadly to a cat if the cat so much as cuddles up next to the dog. Hartz is well known for this problem-- as well as Advantix, which some folks might consider to be safer because it can sometimes be found through veterinary hospitals.
