i did some quick research on this subject this morning because a co-worker has his puppy at work yesterday and the poor thing was infested with fleas. i had my 2 there for a short time with the puppy before i realized his has the fleas. (i am hoping mine didn't get any from the experience because they have never had a problem with fleas). this is one of the things i found on flea repellants.
Lemon Skin Tonic
bring 1 pint of water to a boil and remove from heat
add 1 thinly sliced lemon
allow to steep overnight or all day
strain liquid
The liquid can be put into a spray bottle, squeeze bottle or just a container. Apply liberally to the coat of the dog and rub in so that the skin is wet.
Lemons are very good for the skin and contain limonene which is an effective insect repellent. The limonene actually dissolves fleas' waxy coating causing dehydration and death of the flea.
Use as often as necessary.

also........ for out side. one of the suggestions was to sprinkle 20 mule team borax around. that will kill off lots of insects and pest. (it works for me here with these southern roaches) you do have to be careful not to let the pets ingest any of it.
or....... lemon grass it good for repelling fleas and misquitos. another ideas was cedar chips. fleas don't like the smell of it.
one suggestion was to make a cedar bed by using cedar litter ( i assume they meant kitty litter) in a pillow case and sew to seal.
hope this helps you. I just did a quick search on fleas. you probably will find lots more.
