One thing to think about is that dogs are pack animals. They don't like to be alone or apart from the rest of the pack. They think they're one of us, or vice versa and want to be with us all the time. They don't understand crating and to some it's a form of exile. Our Border Collie wouldn't have it at all, but those pooches seem to have a really developed mind.

What we've tried to do with Reesie is to let her grow up think that the crate is a hideout, a safe place to go when she isn't feeling well or has some anxiety, or just needs some peace. She's in there right now, and the door is open. Since patella surgery, she goes in there more often but that's expected.

Best suggestion I've heard in another thread is to let the peanut sleep in a stroller next to the bed and see how that goes. Keeps them close but safe.
