It is sweet that you are thinking of his welfare first but honestly I wouldn't even consider rehoming in these circumstances.
A lot of people are gone 9-5 that have Yorkies and this is how they live for years. The dogs do fine. If you think he needs more, how about a playmate, a dog walker or daycare once or twice a week?
