I guess we are using the word "cause" differently, I agree obesity and genetics have been shown to increase the risk factor, in type 2 diabetes, but what I mean is what "causes" the pancreas to stop producing enough insulin, as seen in type 1 diabetes, or in type 2 what causes the body to be unable to use the insulin produced. In other words, we know you are more likely to get type 2 diabetes, if you have a family history of it and you are overweight, but we don't know why everyone who is overweight and has a family history doesn't get it.
