Actually, they do know what causes canine diabetes. Just like with humans, obesity and genetics are the main causes.

Canine diabetes can also be caused by steriods, and repeated bouts of pancreatitis. Unspayed female dogs are at a much higher risk of diabetes than spayed females or males.
