I would say that the spanking is probably making it worse and hindering the learning process.

I try to keep all that kind of stuff out of reach first off and if I do catch my pup getting into something, I get it out of his mouth and say no firmly. He still get's into stuff...but he's a puppy and that's what puppy's do. :-\
