I have never heard of them taking a small animal, but my neighbors and I just went through what could be called a scene from "The Birds" about a month ago. They were everywhere, at least 30/40 of them squaking away, and nothing would scare them away....I tried video taping them as there were soooo many, but hard to catch them all in flight....Needless to say, since then I am extremely cautious with my lil one.....
