With AKC...

1. The breeder registers the litter. Puppy registration papers come in at that point. The papers are given to the new owner so that they can register their puppy...pick out registration name, opt to get 3 generation pedigree, etc.

2. Breeders and show people are more interested in having the papers. Breeders...to future register their litters...and show breeders need them for showing.

3. Registered pups will generally run you more than non-registered pups.

4. Unless you meet the criteria in #2 or just want to have the papers there is no backlash. Many people receive the papers from breeders but don't actually ever register their pup.
