I started using the bells Dec 08 for Carlie(10 months) and Rocky (3 years). Rocky is the bell ringer I would have to say Carlie prefers that her big brother ring them for her. Neither dog wanted anything to do with the bells until I tied a fuzzy squeeky squirel to the end of the bells. The directions say take them out every single time so they know that is what is going to happen. Eventually they will only ring the bells when they really have to go outside. But ..have they met a determined adorable yorkie?
