I wouldn't let him have run of the house or you will never get him house trained. Put him in an expen attatched to the front of a wire crate, then put a blanket over the crate, and bedding inside. Put a pee-pad at the opposite end and a toy, water in a no tip dish, and a chewy. Take him outside every hour to play and potty, and remember, lots of praises when he potties. You can put him on the sofa at night with you if you watch TV, but don't play with him there. Keep it calm, so he can learn that we don't play on the furniture. (you could give him a Kong to chew) Continue taking him out every hour. During the night let him use the pee pad. If he misses the pad during the day, you can take a kleenex and blot a bit of the pee and dab it on the pad so he can get the scent there. Use Alcohol to keep the floor clean. If you want, you could also put the Poochie Bells on the door knob where he would be going out of the most, and each time you go to take him outside, put him down by the door and take his paw and hit the bell then let him out.
Puppies are a lot of work, but so much fun if the house training is done this way. There won't be any "accidents", and once they pee on a carpet, they will always pee on it. Good luck with your baby. It will be so nice to see him grow up here.
