You can adjust how far down the flotation device sinks into the water. At first, you fill the float with lots of water so the dog can get used to it. As they get used to it you put less water in the float so that there is less water in the middle. The dogs don't have to push down on it and the bowl is constructed of K-Resin SBC — a high-quality food-grade polymer. I am very picky about my dog's bowls and have always changed her water dishes every day (I have several and could put them in the dishwasher to clean.), but I could only afford one at this price
However, it cleans very well and if your dog has a "drinking problem" this bowl is totally worth it!
